Last night myself and a group of friends watched the new Bo Burnham special “What.” Already understanding that the man is a hell of a lot smarter than I am, I had no idea what to expect when he first started acting to a prerecorded intro. Though early on it became very apparent that this was not at all what we thought it was going to be.
Instead of the cheeky yet enjoyable “New Math” Bo instead brought all his intelligence straight to the fore front of his skit. Less comic stand up more philosophical commentary on art, religion and his struggle with his fame, Burnham opens up to an almost uncomfortably vulnerable place where we discover a cold hard and calculating young intelligent man and his feelings of isolation and hardship.
It is truly spectacular.
Randomly throughout the show he shouts “Art is a lie” I believe referring to the creative process that is used when writing his stand up. And that the makings of what is considered art seem arbitrary when scrutinized.
Moved by this mans ballsy move, I present to you a song that is not the best this band has to offer, but plays in with this mentality of meaninglessness. With nothing but a collection of sad songs, Deer Tick has brought in a new look at the folk-rock scene and has with it a refreshing breath of air. Though they’ve been around for a few years now, on the chance you haven’t heard or seen them yet, take a listen.
